What is Sport Psychology?
Sport Psychology is the science of the behaviour applied to exercise and sport participation. Increasing numbers of athletes and coaches are using sport psychologists to help them gain a personal and competitve edge to manage stress and anxiety more effectively, improve concentration and motivation, increase confidence and promote better communication. This field had been percolating for 70 years, yet many people think of it as a commonsensical mind games.

- IRISH SPORTS COUNCIL BEIJING REPORT puts psychology in the spotlight. While the role of sport psychology was seen as central to individual performances it was noted that systematic integrated support was lacking in many of our Olympians programmes. The survey of Olympic athletes by consultants on behalf of the ISC reported that 15% of athletes ticked the not applicable box for sport psychology. While only 45% of respondents felt sport psychology was effective this may be a direct criticism of the model of support for most athletes through the carding scheme. Irish Olympic squads had a maximum of between 10 and 20 days psychological support per year across the Olympic cycle while their US counterparts in some sports had from 60-90 days per annum over the four years.
